Team Selection Policy U12-20

Our objective is to create a positive learning atmosphere for our members by developing players and team skills in a competitive environment with an emphasis on good sportsmanship.

Team selection is the responsibility of the Coaching Director and the Boy’s and Girl’s Coordinators in consultation with coaches and the committee. The Team Selection Committee convenes and looks at all information on hand from registration, coaches and player evaluations to determine the best team fit.

Player Evaluation is based on the following:

  • Coaches feedback
  • Performance throughout the season
  • Coaching Director’s feedback (including consultation with Boys and Girls Coordinators)
  • Age
  • Special circumstances

Players who register on time are placed into a team based on their evaluations.  Players who register late (after registrations have closed) cannot be guaranteed a place in the team; team placement will be at LTBC’s discretion.

New Registrations

Players who are new at the club may be placed in a team-based on proven experience and past results. A players age may also be taken into consideration. Team placement will be at the discretion of the Team Selection Committee.

Ideally, teams will consist of 8 players. On some occasions, it may be necessary to place additional or fewer players in a team. Teams with 9 players will only be formed if the club is unable to create an additional team.

Once teams are selected, players and coaches will be informed via email.

Note: Sometimes it is necessary to distribute the talent across an age group to give us the best chance of competing when an age group is low on numbers. For example, only two teams in one age group.

All players evaluations remain the property of the club and will be kept confidential, this information will not be available to parents or players.

Age Groups

Age Groups are set by the Diamond Valley Basketball Association (DVBA). Players can move up an age group one season early:

  • If there is availability in the above age group, and
  • It doesn’t negatively impact the player’s current age group (for example, leave a team short in numbers).

The Team Selection Committee will consider other applications if a family believes there are extenuating circumstances that should be taken into consideration. Each case will be considered on its merits.

Team Grading

LTBC put forward their best teams as team 1, 2 etc. At the start of each season, the club nominates each team into a specific grade. DVBA’s Grade Secretaries review the performance of teams throughout the first 5-6 weeks of grading and determine the grade to which each team should be assigned. They endeavour to have all teams placed into a grade in which they will be competitive. The club does not have input into the final grade that DVBA place each team

All enquiries regarding team placement are to be directed to the Coaching Director and/or relevant Age Group Coordinator.
